What Is A Hashtag?

Hashtags are a way to tag posts to draw attention or group content around a topic. A hashtag can be a single word or a short phrase that helps you to find posts or information easier with a theme or contains specific content.

How To Create A Hashtag

All hashtags begin with the # symbol, and there are no punctuation capital letters or other symbols in a hashtag, only letters. There are no spaces in a hashtag. Hashtags should contain one to three words, and the best hashtags are short and easy to remember. Hashtags have only grown in popularity since they were first introduced on Twitter in 2007 to tag specific topics.

Why You Should Use Hashtags For Your Business

Hashtags make a great companion to your post. They help your content to be found by the right people. Hashtags allow people to search your content. People on social media can follow specific hashtags, so when you post and use a hashtag, your content shows up in their feed whether they follow you are not. In turn, it helps to grow your audience and your business. If you use any type of social media to sell your handmade crafts, I recommend using hashtags. Hashtags can expand your craft business’s reach on social media and promote engagement.

How To Use Hashtags

When you create a post on social media, you can add a relative hashtag to help people find your post. When you see a post with a hashtag, you can follow it by clicking or tapping on it. The hashtag will then show you other posts that include that same hashtag. This is why you want to use common hashtags.

What Are The Best Hashtags For My Business?

Each craft and handmade business is different, so the hashtags should reflect what you are making. The goal is to attract buying customers, so you want to select hashtags that will be relevant but common.

I created a list of 3-5 hashtags that describe my craft business that I can use with every post, and then I add other hashtags to that to narrow down what I make. For my business, I make machine-embroidered items. The items vary, so I use #embroidery #handmade #DIY for my standard hashtags. Then I add hashtags to narrow down what I made.

What Hashtags Get The Most Likes?

This will depend on your niche. A simple Google search can help you choose the best hashtags for your business. I use Best-hashtags.com to find hashtags for my post. Best-hashtags.com will show you a list of the most liked and second most liked hashtags. It will also show you the top 10 hashtags for that word. I then choose hashtags that apply to my post and ensure they are in the top 10 list. I choose the relevant hashtags for my post and make a list. I may do this process several times if I have more than one main focus in my post. There are several sites that help you choose hashtags that you can try.

Do Hashtags Attract Followers?

While hashtags will put your content in front of a broader audience, keep in mind that just using hashtags alone won’t increase your engagement. However, using hashtags combined with a description, a question, or comments will help you to attract more followers. If you want more likes and comments, you need to be creative in both your hashtags and your wording.

What Platforms Use Hashtags?

While most platforms use hashtags, some platforms have better results using hashtags. Each platform’s algorithm has a preferred amount of hashtags. Knowing how many hashtags to post on each platform helps plan the hashtags for your post. I will cover the most popular platforms used for craft businesses.

Hashtags On Twitter

Twitter is where the original hashtag began as a way to tag posts. Each post has a 180-character count limit. Twitter’s algorithm does the best when you use one or two hashtags. You have the option to use more as long as you have the character counts available. When choosing your hashtags, make sure they are the most relevant options for people to find your post.

How To Use Hashtags On Instagram

Instagram was the second platform that jumped on the hashtag trend. With well over 2,000 post characters, you have enough space to create a great description and use hashtags. Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post. The algorithm like anywhere from three to thirty hashtags per post. If you are posting an Instagram story, you can use up to 10 hashtags. Unlike Twitter, using more hashtags is the best approach for boosting your reach and engagement.

How To Use Hashtags On Facebook

Facebook suggests only using one to three relevant hashtags for each post. Using more than that can actually hurt your post reach. When typing a hashtag, Facebook will offer suggestions of popular hashtags to help you know what hashtags are performing well. When using hashtags on Facebook, make sure your post is set to public if you want to reach outside of your followers.

How To Use Hashtags On Etsy

When setting up a listing on Etsy, you can add tags. This is how you tag your content on Etsy instead of using hashtags. Start by picking one or two short phrases that best describe your listed item that people are most likely to search for when trying to find your item. You can use up to thirteen tags on your Etsy listing. I recommend using them all to have a better chance of being found when someone performs a search.

How To Use Hashtags On Pinterest

Pinterest suggests using one or two hashtags on your pins to help people find your content. Pinterest prefers niched-down hashtags to help people find your Pins. You have 500 characters to use in your description on Pinterest.

    1. I have noticed that over the past few years, they don’t drive engagement like they used to. I think people that are using hashtags incorrectly are saturating the algorithm and hurting those who are trying to use them for traffic.
