How To Know It Is Time To Quit Your Job

Have you ever wondered if it is time to quit your job or start looking for a different job? You are very fortunate if you have never left a job or had a nagging sense of dread when reporting to work. Most people experience a change in employment an average of 12 times. Have you ever wrestled with the thought of quitting? How do you know when it is time to leave?

Learning to leave when it was time was a hard lesson for me to learn. I worked for a small company of 20 employees. My direct supervisor was the definition of narcissistic. She made it a game of building me up to tear me down. She was loud, vulgar, and manipulative. Everyone in the company was scared of her, even her boss. After starting, it didn’t take me long to realize her personality, but I enjoyed my work, so I endured four years of mental abuse. When I quit, it was hard, but I realize now that it was time to walk away from the toxic work environment for my mental health.

When It Is Diminishing Your Self Worth

When a job is diminishing your self-worth, and you start questioning your value, you must take care of your mental health. No one on this earth is not important! When a job makes you feel unimportant, it is time to find a place that makes you feel valued. When you have a supervisor, boss, or even coworkers who make you feel small, you need to reevaluate your position. No one should ever make anyone else feel worthless. Employers should make sure their employees are not being bullied, and if they are the ones doing the bullying, then the problem is the management.

There Is No Growth Or Training

There should always be something new to learn, no matter your position. I love to learn new ways, techniques, and technology. Your job should always offer growth opportunities. If there are no opportunities for education or even a review of learning material, you will feel stagnant. Learning something new and putting it to use gives you confidence. If you don’t feel like you are growing from your job or if there are no opportunities to advance, you need to seek employment where there are opportunities. This issue alone may not be enough to leave a job but, combined with other problems, can also be limiting you from your full potential.

You Get Physically Sick Before Going To Work

Have you ever sat in your car and cried before reporting to work? Maybe you had to sit in the parking lot and pray hard before facing the workday. I have gotten sick to my stomach because of the dread of going to work. This isn’t a healthy work relationship. When you are afraid of facing the day, you need to look at your situation. Your wellbeing is so much more important than a job, where they will replace you instantly. Take care of yourself and your mental health.

You Have Lost Respect For Upper Management

When someone is in a management role, they are responsible for those employed under them. Some people do not have the leadership skill required to manage. When that is the case, it hurts the whole building. If an incident has occurred where you have lost respect for the authority, it is not fair for you or your company. You need to be able to trust your supervisors confidently. If you cannot trust that someone is looking out for your wellbeing and safety, it is time to find somewhere you can feel safe.

You Question The Company’s Stability

When a company is constantly mentioning that they are not financially sound or they have to make cutbacks that affect your job, this may be a sign you may need to start searching for another position. Life is uncertain, and you could lose your job without warning. If a company openly shares that it is struggling, you may want to start searching for other employment before you are forced to.

No Reward For A Job Well Done And No Punishment For Poor Work

We like to be rewarded for a job well done. If not, then what is the point of trying our best? When you feel like you are not appreciated, you will not be the best version of yourself. When you see coworkers not being punished for breaking the rules, it gives you little motivation to follow the rules. A job should have a balance of reward and punishment for behavior.

You Feel Defeated At The End Of The Day

I remember going to work with a clenched jaw and my defenses up. I would find the most secluded place to start my day and only interact with people that I had to so I could get the job done. I remember thinking, ” THIS ISN’T WHO I AM!”. My job had made me into someone else, someone I did not like. I was never comfortable around my coworkers because I didn’t know who was an enemy and who was not. So many instances had happened that caused me to lose trust in everyone in the office, and I had no one I could breathe around. My supervisor had isolated me and lied about me to the point I was scared and nervous for 8 hours a day. My case isn’t typical, but if you have left work feeling that you have been defeated or maybe the stress of the day makes you cry all the way home, you need to ask yourself if it is time for a change. We are all going to have bad days at work, but if your bad days at work far exceed your good days, then you need to take care of yourself. You deserve to have good days.

Life is too short to be stuck at a job that destroys you! The only one that will look out for your best interest is you. Your job will replace you in an instant. Take care of yourself.
