When you do something that you love, it’s rewarding. But loving what you do and getting paid for doing it are even better. Hobbies are always fun, but when they can also be lucrative! Here are 6 hobbies you can turn into a side hustle.
Most hobbyists think of their practice as a pastime or passion, but some experts say that if you make it your business, you could turn your favorite activity into an impressive source of extra income.
The key is to find out what online marketplaces exist for similar products. For instance, custom-made T-shirts may not sell well at local flea markets because there’s no demand for them there—but if you start selling on Etsy, it might thrive!
Let’s explore 6 hobbies that can easily become a great side gig.
Writing
You might not think that there’s much money to be made by writing, but there are many ways to make a side income this way. You could start a blog or freelance writing. Copywriting pays pretty well, and you can source clients on LinkedIn! Maybe you want to write an ebook instead, write poems, or maybe even children’s storybooks?
The main thing with writing is that you need a product to sell, and you’ll really need to spend time marketing yourself. But if you can make it work, you’ve got a truly passive income.
Graphic design
If you have a talent for art and design, but don’t want the commitment of starting your own business or being self-employed, then try selling your designs online. You can sell t-shirts at various social media marketplaces or help people create logos, graphics, and other forms of artwork.
You can set up your own shop on Redbubble, Merch By Amazon, or even Etsy. If you have a talent for photography and design, you could start offering your services for more creative types of work like album art and book covers. Again, all you need to do is put yourself out there and find yourself some clients to get the ball rolling.
Singing
If you are talented, there is never a shortage of opportunities to share your voice. You can sing in bars, clubs, or restaurants, join a band and be their lead or backup vocalist, and even participate in TV singing contests for prizes!
You could consider offering your services as an event MC. This is becoming more popular lately, and there’s plenty of demand for it. It can vary how much money you make from gig to gig depending on the location and the size of the crowd but assuming you are good at what you do, and you should have no problem finding some regular gigs or even build up a sizable client base so long as they keep coming back for more!
Lastly, in this social media age, singing originals or covers on Youtube or TikTok could be the way to go for you. Many amazing artists have been discovered online this way. Give it a shot!
Photography
Like drawing and other artistic pursuits, this is another skill you can turn into a side hustle. If photography is your passion, consider sharing your work on Instagram or perhaps offering packages where you take family photos of loved ones such as children and grandchildren. You could create photo books for people too—they make great gifts. Or you could sell your photos on stock photography websites!
If you are truly passionate and talented at this hobby, then others will appreciate your photos. You may even find that some of those who follow you online may start contacting you for local photoshoots, or who knows, you might hit it big and get flown out to exotic locations to capture special moments.
Teaching Yoga or Fitness Classes
If you are good at either of these activities and have the patience for teaching, then why not consider offering your services to others? This can be done in person or online. In many cases, people want to learn but may not have the time or money to attend physical classes.
You could even go so far as setting up a private studio in your home where you can offer one-on-one training or small group sessions. This will require some business savvy, marketing skills, and organization, but it could end up being very rewarding!
Making crafts
If you love crafting and are looking for a way to make some money from it, know that the more intricate your work is, the higher price you will usually get if someone were to buy it. This doesn’t necessarily have to be at an online marketplace like Etsy – although they do have dedicated crafters with certain niches who often list their products there.
You can find people interested in purchasing things from social media such as Facebook or Instagram. And you can teach others how to do what you do via Youtube!
If you’ve got a talent for making crafts, it’s worth trying to monetize your hobby. All that is required of you, in the beginning, are the materials and time you put towards crafting!
